Things They Dont Tell You About Pregnancy
There is almost always something that can be done to alleviate your discomfort during pregnancy. This is not a replacement for medical advice.
Symphysis Pubis Disorder (SPD)
Sharp, sudden, stabbing pain in your vagina and pelvis. Your symphysis pubis is the joint between the two halves of the front of your pelvic bone. During pregnancy, the hormone Relaxin softens ligaments, sometimes causing hypermobility and pain.
Recommendations:
- Assessment from a pelvic floor physiotherapist, osteopath, or chiropractor
- Massage and acupuncture
- Keep legs together when rolling in bed or getting in/out of cars
- Pregnancy support belt
Hyperemesis Gravidarum (Morning Sickness)
Approximately 50% of pregnancies are affected. Nausea often resolves after 12-14 weeks but can persist longer.
- Protein: nuts by the bed, power bars in your bag. Stay ahead of the hunger.
- Ginger: tea, tincture, candies, capsules. The most potent anti-nausea herb, safe in pregnancy.
- Vitamin B6: often deficient in intense nausea cases
- Acupuncture: very effective when done by experienced practitioners
- Electrolytes: dehydration exacerbates nausea
Round Ligament Pain
Sharp, shooting pain from stretching ligaments supporting the growing uterus. Affects up to a third of pregnancies.
- Daily stretching and prenatal yoga
- Rest with supportive pillows
- Stay hydrated
- Bodywork: chiropractic, massage, physio tape
Prenatal Depression
More than 10% of pregnant people struggle with depressive symptoms. Ensure proper assessment for thyroid, blood sugar, and nutritional deficiencies. Move your body, get sunlight, talk to someone, journal, and eat well.
Ultimately, sleeping, hydrating, eating protein, moving your body and reaching out for help is never wrong.
