Three Tools to Encourage Endorphin Release in Labour
Endorphins are the body's natural pain reducing hormones. They can be stronger than morphine in reducing pain. Every labour contraction causes endorphin release, with production increasing as labour intensifies.
Endorphins in childbirth:
- Reduce pain sensation
- Produce an altered state of consciousness
- Promote endurance
- Facilitate euphoria after birth
- Foster alertness postpartum
- Encourage prolactin release
TENS Machine
The TENS machine emits mild electrical pulses through skin electrodes. These pulses interrupt pain signals and encourage endorphin production. Birth-specific models have a BOOST button for stronger contractions.
Light Touch Massage
Slow, light, gentle strokes stimulate nerve endings, sending a rush of endorphins through the body. Use fingertips and nails along the back, sacrum, neck, shoulders, arms, and legs.
Birth Comb
A fine toothed comb placed in the palm and squeezed during contractions. The fine teeth stimulate nerve endings, triggering endorphin response. Also distracts the brain from focusing solely on contraction pain.
